Sandalwood & Essential Oils

Essential oils are used in the practice of aromatherapy to promote specific moods, heal various physical and mental conditions and to ease body aches and pains when used in massage. Most essential oils are plant-based and are extracted using one of several distillation or extraction techniques, including simple pressing, steam distillation, maceration and enfleurage, a complex technique where delicate flowers are pressed to obtain the oil.

History

Sandalwood essential oil has been used for 4,000 years by many Eastern cultures due to its healing properties, according to Maria Lis-Balchin in her book, "Aromatherapy Science: A Guide for Healthcare Professionals." The ancient Egyptians are reported to have used it in medicine, embalming practices and rituals to honor the gods. In Indian culture, it is used to honor the dead and is also used for medicinal purposes.

Extraction

Sandalwood essential oil is extracted through a steam distillation process. This process involves grinding dried wood chips of the sandalwood tree, placing the chips in a chamber and steaming the chips until the distillation process is complete and the oil is produced. The average yield is 100 lb. of oil per ton of sandalwood chips, according to the National Institute for Industrial Research in the book, "The Complete Technology Book of Essential Oils."

Benefits

Sandalwood essential oil is used extensively throughout the practice of aromatherapy for its numerous healing benefits. It is commonly used in incense and perfumes due to its musky, woody aroma. According to author Maria Lis-Balchin, sandalwood has antidepressant, calming, sedative and aphrodisiac properties. Although there is no scientific evidence to support these claims, it is used to treat stress, nervous tension, dry skin disorders and coughs, among other physical and mental conditions.

Methods of Use

Like most other essential oils, sandalwood oil can be used in a variety of ways. The oil can be burned in an aromatherapy burner or oil diffuser to promote a specific mood. It can also be added to a warm bath to promote calmness and relaxation. You can add a few drops of the oil to a carrier oil such as grape seed or olive oil to make a homemade aromatic massage oil blend.

Warning

Sandalwood essential oil may be a skin irritant if applied undiluted to the skin. You should always dilute sandalwood oil in a carrier oil before topical application. Avoid using sandalwood essential oil if you are pregnant, nursing or have another medical condition unless under medical supervision.
