People of many cultures have practiced aromatherapy since the existence of primitive tribes, and the fact that aromatherapy is still used gives credit to its effectiveness in promoting health and well-being. In ancient times, the smoke from burning plants was used to heal the sick. Today, the health effects of essential oils can be obtained through the use of compresses, salves, massage and inhalation devices. The health effects of essential oils work on many levels, and young and old alike can benefit from their use, but before using essential oils, ask your doctor if essential oils are safe for you to use. Certain oils should not be used by pregnant women or by individuals with certain health conditions.

Pain Relief

Use essential oils to help bring relief from back pain and arthritic pain. The use of essential oils for treatment of these types of conditions can also reduce swelling. Essential oils can be used during a massage, or they can be added to the water in your bathtub. Oils used to promote pain relief can also be inhaled. Use clary sage essential oil to reduce inflammation associated with back pain. Alleviate pain from arthritis with the use of rosemary and marjoram essential oils.

Mood Enhancement

Use essential oils to enhance mood by alleviating stress and depression and promoting relaxation. Some essential oils can energize a tired body, and some can induce sleep. Add essential oils that alleviate stress and depression and oils that promote relaxation or sleep to your bathwater. Inhale them, or have them massaged into your neck to obtain their health effects. Use lavender essential oil to dispel depression and make you sleep, and use ginger to energize your body.

Normalization of Skin Conditions

Help normalize problem skin with essential oils. Use lavender or tea tree oil in the form of a compress to help normalize oily skin. Add sandalwood to a bowl of warm water to steam your face and combat dry or aging skin, or add this essential oil to your bathwater.

Other Health Effects

Lower high blood pressure by inhaling the scent of lavender or marjoram. Inhale the scent of sandalwood to boost libido, or breathe in the scent of jasmine to alleviate respiratory problems. Alleviate premenstrual symptoms by inhaling the scent of geranium.
